Prologue

In the year 2010 I was blessed with the opportunity to live in Uganda on the continent of Africa for 6 months. This was truly a life changing experience for me.  I lived in the capital city of Kampala and worked in Entebbee on the shores of spectacular Lake Victoria.
During my brief stay in Uganda I knew that it was definitely a place that I would want to live on a more permanent basis. I was attracted to the people, the culture, the food (well maybe not so much) and most especially the lush green vegetation. I drawn in by the simply and slower pace of life, even in a urban environment. Kampala is what we Americans call a city with a “small town mentality” in every good sense of the phrase. Even thou there was so much abject poverty and people live from “hand to mouth” or as most African Americans—from “paycheck to paycheck”; people live with a joy that cannot be obtained with material things. A love of family and land seem to be the prevailing values of the day. Don’t mistake me—there is are as many societal illness in Uganda as there is in America. With all of this, I still sought out opportunities to return to Uganda.
In January 2011 God blessed me with the opportunity to return to Africa. In June I will be returning to live in Kigali, Rwanda.
This platform will be my medium to share my experiences, reflections and introspections as an African American living in Africa with other African Americans who have not yet or may not have the opportunity I have been blessed with to see the origins of the African Diaspora.
